Open Media Now Goals
Open Media Now is a non-profit established to serve persons and entities who share the common business interest of furthering the creation of an open media infrastructure. Our aim is to engage in a variety of projects that improve upon both the functionality of, and access to, open media solutions. A good summary of our goals is to simply say we are promoting an infrastructure that enables the creation, the streaming, and the viewing of digital content (using free software) in a legally conforming way. We strive to develop high-quality free software tools and to work actively within the legislative and regulatory communities to encourage an industry environment that provides for the free and open utilization of those tools.
Here's what we'll be working on:
1. Developing an open media infrastructure through the collaborative efforts of the members. Through these collaborative efforts, we will greatly enhance the current media market and stimulate the development of cross-platform media solutions. All work on our open media infrastructure will be donated to the Free Software Foundation (www.fsf.org), and will be freely available for license to both members and non-members under General Public License (GPL).
2. Hosting conferences and providing on-line forums to encourage collaborative efforts between software developers and corporations in the development of an open media infrastructure.
3. Supporting industry-wide standards relating to open media software.
4. Educating the public, legislators and policy makers on the benefits of an open media infrastructure. To ensure that the development of open media is not hampered by industry-damaging legislation, we will conduct public campaigns. These campaigns will be aimed at developing, adapting and preserving the ability to distribute, create and display digital content in a legally-conforming manner.
